The unmanned?Dragon space capsule, built by commercial firm SpaceX, is slated to lift off atop the company’s Falcon 9 rocket early Saturday from here at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The spacecraft has an instantaneous launch window at 4:55 a.m. EDT (0855 GMT), with a 70 percent chance of good weather predicted (the main risk of a delay is posed by the possibility of cumulus clouds).

If all goes well,?Dragon?will fly by the space station on Monday (May 21) and rendezvous and berth at the outpost the day after, becoming the first non-governmental vehicle to do so. The mission is the final test flight planned for Dragon, which has been developed under NASA’s COTS (Commercial Orbital Transportation Services) program aimed at nurturing?private spacecraft?to supply the International Space Station.

The mission is a critical test for NASA’s plan to outsource transportation to low-Earth orbit to the commercial sector, allowing the agency to begin work on a new heavy-lift rocket for deep space. Some in Congress and elsewhere have been critical of the scheme, arguing that private vehicles are untested and less reliable than NASA’s in-house built spacecraft. [Photos: SpaceX Poised for Historic Launch]

If Saturday’s launch is successful, it could help sway the naysayers, NASA administrator Charles Bolden said.

“I think it will make a tremendous difference,” Bolden told SPACE.com in April. “Everybody wants to see performance. You can promise things all you want, but nothing works like actual performance, and so it’s a very important mission for SpaceX but an incredibly important mission for us at NASA.”

SpaceX (officially Space Exploration Technologies Corp. of Hawthorne, Calif.) has designed Dragon to fly robotically at first, though the company has designs to man-rate the capsule. Eventually, Dragon is planned to be able to carry up to seven crewmembers to orbit, and could be used to transport astronauts as well as cargo to the space station.

For this test flight, Dragon is loaded with 1,014 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo for the orbiting laboratory, including 674 pounds (306 kg) of food, clothing and supplies for the station’s six-man crew. It will also?deliver scientific equipment?and electronic hardware, including a laptop.

If the capsule’s on-orbit checkouts go smoothly, then on Tuesday (May 22), NASA astronaut Don Pettit and European Space Agency flyer Andre Kuipers use the space station’s 57.7-foot (17.6-meter) robotic arm to reach out and grab Dragon and berth it to the station’s Harmony node.

The vehicle is scheduled to stay at the outpost for about two weeks. Then, it will be unberthed and will head back to Earth where it is planned to re-enter the atmosphere and land in the Pacific Ocean.

In contrast to the other unmanned vehicles that ferry cargo to the space station, Dragon is equipped with a heat shield to survive re-entry and be recovered after landing. Thus, before it departs the station, astronauts plan to load it full of science experiments ready for analysis on the ground, as well as used hardware to be returned to NASA. ?

standby generators – Automatic Generators for Home Needs

The concept of the generators for home use is much simple and it is not really a complicated thing as many people think about.

Generators for home use are commonly known as the backup generators that provide enough electricity to run the household appliances at the time of power outage. The concept is whenever the power outage occur the tripper switch on the generator turned on and it start functioning, providing alternative power source for the appliances so that you would not suffer from the power shortage difficulties.

Once if you installed a standby generator in your home, it monitors the main power supply that you recieve regularly. Once the electricity goes down the automatic switch turned on so that it diverts the main power source with the backup generator for the home appliances. But this method would not work out with the portable generators as they have to connect manually and needs a kick to start functioning.

When the power outage occur the signal is sent and the generator starts functioning providing power supply for the home appliances. Just as the same on starting method it monitors the main power utility and once if the main electricity power recieved it send the signal so that the automatic tripper switch triggers and diverts the backup generators power with the main power utility. This process will be continue as long as the generator utility is connected with the home appliances.

This process happens without any initiative from you as it was automatic. Also there will be no fuel requirements for the generator so that there is no need for you to rush in order to fill up the fuel at the time of power outage.

However there are several advantages are there to get benefited at the time of main power interruption, these machineries have to be maintained in a good condition accordingly. You have to keep the necessary parts of the generators and tools that are purchased from the automatic generator dealers so that you can repair the machine in time if any function troubles with the machine. periodically you have to check the condition of the generators and the engine must be oiled. The condition of the battery should also be checked.

There are several online stores of the generator manufacturers and automatic generator dealers are available. Therefore it is not so difficult to search for the standby generator dealers and the generac generator parts online without any difficulties. Only you have to spend a little time to search the standy generator parts online and can save your money.

Oakelectric.com is considered as the best among the available automatic generator dealers. If you are in need of purchasing a generator for your home needs then you can visit their website. It is also possible for you to purchase the generac generator parts online.

But he won?t accept it, which in actual fact is a further characteristic of an individual who features a fear of dedication. We had a conversation regarding it once. Right here it goes:

Me: ?Have you ever been to some severe partnership prior to
Patrick: ?Nope.? Re replied.
Me: ?Why?
Patrick: ?It?s mainly because I?m not prepared however.?
Me: ?What would be the points that made you not ready I asked once more.
He just shrugged his shoulders and paused.
Patrick: ?It is basically simply because I?m fearful to commit into a lady, and I do not choose to get married at this time. I am scared that I could not deal with the duties of a father and a husband at the identical time.?
Me: ?Then that you are one of those that are scared of commitments or even the fear of commitment.?

Review: 4-cylinder Ford Escape strikes the right tone

Ford

The 2013 Escape will offer only four-cylinder engines. Can such engines really match customers’ power expectations? Yes.

By Dan Carney, msnbc.com contributor

We?ve seen this movie before: Stagnant economy. Soaring gas prices.?Government-mandated increases in fuel economy that doom the big vehicles Americans prefer.

In the 1970s, automakers responded to those conditions with that they called ?downsizing.??Cars became cheaply made, cramped and slow.?For some reason, consumers weren?t thrilled with these new models. The quick-and-dirty solution was to bolt a turbocharger onto their wheezing, underperforming four-cylinder engines with the promise of hot performance and good fuel economy.? Sailors have made more reliable promises to girls in foreign ports.

The technology was immature and the result was unreliable: short-lived engines with poor dynamic driving qualities. Ford was one of the culprits, with turbocharged four-cylinder engines offered in models like the Mustang and Thunderbird, which were traditionally powered by V8s.

But that was a long time ago.? In response to pricey gas and more stringent federal fuel economy standards, Ford is rolling out a family of smaller turbocharged engines to replace bigger, thirstier ones.? And this time, Ford got it right.

While the V6 engine option was popular in the outgoing Escape compact SUV, the 2013 Escape will offer only four-cylinder engines.? Can such engines really match customers? power expectations? Yes they can. Especially when they are the turbocharged EcoBoost engines that Ford offers as an upgrade from the base engine.

The base engine is an update of 168-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder seen in the outgoing model and it is a good one for budget-conscious drivers, with 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.? But things start to get more interesting with the next step in the lineup, with a 178-hp turbocharger EcoBoost 1.6-liter four-cylinder.

That’s an incredibly small engine to expect to move a 3,500-plus pound SUV, but thanks to modern turbocharger technology it makes both the peak power and the low-speed torque to move the Escape with good hustle.? It has marginally better horsepower, torque and fuel economy than the base engine, a combination that makes it an appealing upgrade.? The EcoBoost 1.6 offers the maximum fuel economy among the Escape?s engines, with 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

A lot of buyers liked their V6 engines, though. What are they to do? The 240-hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is the answer for them. Ford did extra homework on this engine, giving drivers more power than the old model?s V6 with fuel economy nearly equal to that of the base engine, at 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

But just as importantly, Ford engineers sweated the detailed needed to make the EcoBoost 2.0 smooth and quiet enough to serve as a legitimate substitute for a V6. This is the area where carmakers will see the most resistance from customers, because V6 and V8 engines are smooth and quiet, with a refined exhaust note.? Four-cylinders are inherently raucous, challenging engineers to find ways to tame their obnoxious nature if upmarket customers are to accept them.

Ford has achieved that with the 2.0 EcoBoost.? The 1.6 EcoBoost targets a customer with a sportier mindset who might want to hear the engine a little bit, so it is louder, but the 2.0-liter is thoroughly muffled.

That quietness is indicative of the 2013 Escape?s overall refinement. Like the Ford Focus compact car on which it is based, the Escape is a notch above its competitors, providing a rich feeling driving experience. Unlike the Focus, the Escape enjoys a proper automatic transmission, with six gears and slick shifts, so the Escape won?t chase away potential buyers with an irritating, rough-driving automated manual transmission posing as an automatic.

The Escape?s cabin is opulently detailed, and even the entry-level models have pleasant soft-touch surfaces. The thick-rimmed steering wheel connects to excellent steering that provides superb feedback. The Mazda CX-5 is the Escape?s only equal dynamically, and the Escape has less road and wind noise inside for a more placid passenger space.

Like other new Fords, the Escape boasts an improved version of the annoying-to-use Sync voice command system and MyFord Touch touch-screen infotainment systems. The latest iteration is less of a pain in the, er, neck to use but still falls short of the simplicity and convenience of properly designed knobs and switches. At this point MyFord Touch remains an exercise in technology for technology?s sake, so we look forward to the next upgrade. We?d still opt for the conventional radio and climate controls.

But here?s a tiny electronic detail they got right: the turn signal. Seems simple enough, but in recent years Ford and other carmakers have decided that it would be better for the control stalk to return to center, even when you?ve activated the turn signal. For the Escape they?ve gone back to having the stalk remain in the raised or lowered position if the turn signal is on, letting you know it is still on and making turning it off simple. When the stalk is already in the middle, how do you cancel a turn signal?

Other electronic gimmicks: a tailgate that opens and closes remotely by kicking your foot under the rear in the manner of an old straight-ahead field goal kicker (props to Redskins kicker Mark Mosley, 1982 NFL MVP, the last straight-ahead kicker and the only kicker ever named MVP!).? And electronic grille shutters that block airflow to the radiator at highway speeds to trim aerodynamic drag and boost fuel economy.

The ?U? in SUV does stand for ?Utility? and Ford added that in the Escape by stretching the vehicle?s wheelbase and adding most of that newfound space to the rear seat for more passenger legroom. The cargo area is also larger for that ubiquitous ?stuff? people cite when explaining their need for an SUV rather than a sedan.

The Escape marks our third consecutive compact SUV review, as this hotly contested segment turns over this year. That?s because compact SUVs are second only to sedans in popularity, and the two groups account for 60 percent of new car sales.

With impressive innovations like EcoBoost providing an excellent combination of power and frugality, it is easy to see why these vehicles are attracting a large following.

Tiny Deep-Sea Life Eats Dinosaur-Era Meals

Microbes living in the seabed below the deep ocean are taking the slow-food movement to extremes. According to new research, these microorganisms are subsisting on nutrients first laid down when dinosaurs still walked the Earth.

Nutrient-carrying sediment rarely makes it to the deep seafloor at the North Pacific Gyre far north of Hawaii. If a grain of sand falls to the seabed, it will be another 1,000 years before another grain lands on top of it, said Hans R?y, aquatic ecologist at Aarhus University in Denmark and leader of the new study, published Thursday (May 17) in the journal Science. And yet, an expedition to the North Pacific turned up populations of incredibly slow-living microbes in these depths.

“It’s pretty amazing, because if you look at the deepest parts, these are layers that were laid down back when the dinosaurs were walking on this planet, and there has been no input of new organic material since that,” R?y told LiveScience. “They’ve been chewing on the same bone for 86 million years.” [Top 10 Immortals]

Microbial mission

Research stretching back to the late 1980s suggests that as much as 90 percent of the Earth’s microorganisms live in the seabed, R?y said. But these microbial communities remain mysterious, largely because they resist typical laboratory experiments. If you wanted to measure the metabolism (how fast the body uses energy) of microbes living in coastal mud, you’d simply take some mud and track how fast they burned through the oxygen in that sample. Because coastal seafloor organisms live in a nutrient-rich, fast-turnover world, the experiment would only take a few minutes.

To do the same thing with the slow-living bacteria found beneath the North Pacific Gyre, you’d have to wait 1,000 years to detect a change in oxygen levels, R?y said.

That’s what makes the new discovery important, he said. The bacterial communities living in the Pacific have been chugging along for millions of years. All scientists have to do is go out and measure their activities. [Expedition Gallery: Plumbing the Depths]

During an expedition on the U.S. Navy research vessel R/V Knorr, R?y and his colleagues drilled long columns of sediment called cores out of the seabed. They first sampled from a long stretch along the equator, varying their distance from land, but not their latitude. Next, the vessel sailed north into the Pacific, and researchers took seabed samples at different latitudes, but all at equal distances from land.

Slow living in the seafloor

In most places, oxygen penetrates only a millimeter into the ocean bed, sometimes making it as much as about a foot and a half (0.5 meters) in deep-sea zones. But in the deep North Pacific Gyre, researchers hauled up cores 98 feet (30 m) long and found oxygen reaching all the way down.

The reason, R?y said, is that so few nutrients reach the seabed here that the microbes in the seafloor barely eat. When they don’t eat, they don’t use oxygen. Thus, the oxygen hangs around in the sediment for thousands of years.

The researchers aren’t sure how old the individual microbes in the colonies are. It takes the microbes 1,000 years to double their biomass, they calculated. In comparison, a familiar microbe like the food-poisoning bug salmonella might take between 20 minutes and two hours to double, depending on its environment.

Cells double their biomass to divide, so the results suggest the microbes are at least 1,000 years old. But that number is a minimum, R?y said.

“Maybe they grow and divide, but the result could just as well indicate that they have a long repair cycle where over a 1,000-year period, they actually replace all the compartments of the cell,” he said. “If that is the case, the cells could be much older.”

The study is “one of the best glimpses yet into this glacially slow pace of life in the subsurface,” said Tori Hoehler, a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in California who was not involved in the study. The microbes in these deep-sea colonies have a metabolic rate 2 million times slower than an average human cell, Hoehler told LiveScience. And if you were to measure the oxygen used in about 11 square feet (1 square meter) of sediment in these North Pacific areas, it would take 10 years for the bacteria within that area to consume the amount of oxygen that a person uses in a single breath.

The study emphasizes how small a portion of life the microbes and other organisms studied by humans really are, Hoehler said.

“We live in a sunlit world where a lot of energy flows through the system, and it allows for a lot of flourishing biology, but that’s really just a thin skin on the surface of our planet,” he said.

Will Android Replace Your Game Console?

‘); NS_AdDivs.push(NS_AdDiv); NS_AdZones.push(NS_AdZone); NS_Ads++;

Back in the day, all the cool kids had a Nintendo Entertainment System ? or an Atari, but those guys were weird. As time passed, gaming consoles got more powerful, more popular, and more competitive. Sega, Sony, Nintendo, and even Microsoft were vying for the top position.

Nintendo Entertainment System

Then something changed.

Cell phones started getting ?smarter?. Soon they we were able to install ?programs? on them, which eventually became known as ?apps?. App stores came into being. Developers started writing more complex programs.

Instead of kids (and their dads) wanting the latest and greatest consoles, they started getting the latest and greatest smartphones. Games started arriving. Then they got more advanced. Today?s game ?apps? look every bit as good as high-end games on high-end consoles.

Google TVAbout this time Google released Google TV, and Android-powered box that you hook up to your big-screen. It?s got the same ?Android Market? on it that smartphones and tablets do.

Then something else happened: Google renamed their ?Market? to the ?Play Store?. That sounds awfully ?gamey?, wouldn?t you say?

Imagine for a moment, a Google TV in your living room. While watching your favorite sitcom you see an ad that Night of the Zombie Apocalypse 3 was just released. You hop over to the Google Play Store, purchase, download, and install the app. In minutes you?re playing. Your show can wait.

What?s more, you?re using your Android-powered smartphone as the controller. Your screen serves as a console displaying your health, ammo, and a radar screen with the proximity of the nearest undead. You move around by tilting your phone forward and back, and turn by rotating it clockwise and counterclockwise. It even serves as an augmented reality portal to look through walls, inspect injured people for signs of the virus, and as a GPS-style navigation device to get you through the city.

Your PS3 and XBOX sit idly in the corner. You haven?t even turned them on in weeks. The Wii? That?s for the kids, but lately they?ve been more interested in Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds Space HD on the big screen.

Night of the Zombie Apocalypse 3 for Android?doesn?t exist today, but the technology is there, the games are arriving, and the distribution model is much easier than going down to the game store at midnight to pick up the latest title on disc.

Will Android replace your game console? I think it?s already under way.

1. Check out discount stores. Your local garden-supply store, nursery or home-improvement megastores aren?t the only places to shop. Take a look at the discount stores in your area, like Aldi, Big Lots, or Family Dollar. You might be surprised at what they have to offer ? and what a deal you can get on everything from tomato cages to planters to garden hoses.

2. Look at your hometown hardware store. I often find great values and rebates on certain lawn and garden items at my local Ace or True Value hardware stores.

3. Swap to save. There?s no need for both you and your next-door neighbor to have a full arsenal of tools and supplies. Consider setting up a barter or swap system with a friend or two that you trust and get along with (since I?m sure you?d like to get that edger back in a reasonable time frame.) Seed and plant swaps are another great way to save money by seed saving and sharing with friends and neighbors ? do a web search on ?seed swap? and plug in your city or county to see what?s in your neck of the woods.

4. Gardening, gently used. Another man?s unused mulch could be your treasure. Look on Craigslist, check the newspaper classifieds, or scour local yard-sale listings for mention of gardening supplies and tools.

5. Save at the Restore. Have you been to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore? They?re chock-full of bargains on building supplies, household items, appliances?and, yes, garden tools and supplies! Better still, proceeds from the store?s sales go to support Habitat?s work in your local community.
